A special fire-viewing glass is blue cobalt glass. It is mainly used in chemistry labs to see the flame color reaction of potassium. Blue cobalt glass is commonly made in industries like cement plants, steel mills, and kilns. Its production process is quite unique. In the manufacturing process, they add "cobalt blue" to make this special glass. It mainly contains cobalt aluminate: Co(AlO2)2. Cobalt blue adds a unique blue color to the glass. That's why it's called blue cobalt glass.
The element spectrum of cobalt makes it unable to absorb blue light (that is, it reflects or transmits blue light, while it can completely absorb yellow light with a different wavelength from blue light). Due to the presence of cobalt ions, blue cobalt glass can filter out yellow light. When observing the flame test of potassium, it is necessary to look through blue cobalt glass because potassium compounds are often impure and mixed with some impurities, such as sodium (which is difficult to separate). During the flame test, since sodium has a yellow flame color, it interferes with the observation of the flame color of potassium (purple). Therefore, the yellow light must be filtered out. According to the principle of complementary colors of light, yellow and blue are complementary colors. Using blue cobalt glass can filter out the yellow light, allowing the flame color of potassium - purple - to be clearly seen.
Due to certain specific factors, the size of cobalt glass cannot be made too large. The commonly used size is 50*107, and the maximum size is 400*500. The general thicknesses are: 2.5mm, 3mm, 4mm, and 5mm.
